What Are The Different Types Of Professional Teeth Whitening?

Over time, it is not uncommon for the human teeth to no longer have a bright, white appearance. This can occur due to aging, consuming foods and drinks that stain the teeth, using tobacco products, and also taking certain medications. Fortunately, there are different dental treatments that can be done to remove stains and whiten the teeth. These are some different types of professional teeth whitening procedures.

Professional Bleaching

Professional bleaching is done by covering the discolored teeth with a bleaching gel that contains hydrogen peroxide. The gel is normally left on for 15 to 30 minutes before being suctioned away and rinsed off the teeth. If the desired level of whiteness is not reached during the first treatment, it may be repeated right after rinsing. However, it is possible for several treatments to be needed to remove all staining in which it may be necessary to make a few trips to the dentist. Once the teeth are whitened as desired, the dentist may prescribe a special toothpaste for the patient to use to help maintain the whiteness.

Take-Home Kits

The dentist may also provide the patient with a special take-home kit that is used at home to bleach the teeth. This kit usually contains custom made trays with concentrated bleaching gel that are to be worn every day for a prescribed period of time. These kits are similar to the over the counter at-home bleaching kits, but the bleaching agent is more highly concentrated to ensure the best results. In most cases, the patient will wear the bleaching trays every day for one to two weeks.

Zoom Teeth Whitening

A method known as Zoom Teeth Whitening is another professional whitening procedure commonly performed by dentists. This treatment involves applying a gel to the discolored teeth that are 25% hydrogen peroxide. A special chairside lamp is also used to shine the light directly on the teeth the gel has been applied to. The light from the lamp accelerates the gel to whiten the teeth more quickly and thoroughly. This treatment is normally performed up to three times with each session lasting around 15 minutes.

There are over the counter teeth whitening treatments that can be used to achieve a certain level of whiteness. However, for the brightest whitening results that last for longer periods of time, it is often best to have these treatments professionally performed by your dentist.
